PRE-CONFERENCE WORKSHOP 1 ~ PREVENTION
Thursday, February 15, 2007

This year - as we celebrate our 20th Anniversary - we have dedicated one of our workshops to Prevention. It's important to think about what we can do in our professional and personal lives to make changes promoting healthy lifestyle choices and reducing our risk for sustaining the tragedy and costs associated with an acquired brain injury. We've invited professionals with this specialization in this area to talk about injury prevention. Mr. Matt Herman, Injury Prevention Manager from the BC Ministry of Health opens this workshop with an overview on some of the provincial initiatives in injury prevention. Dr. Philip Groff is the Director of Research & Evaluation at SMARTRISK, responsible for the expansion of research capacity both internally and externally in injury prevention. Dr. Groff was the national coordinator of Listening for Direction on Injury, part of the process in developing a National Strategy for Injury Prevention.  Dr. Groff talks to us about injury prevention in the future. Dr. Louis Francescutti founded the Injury Prevention Centre at the University of Alberta Hospitals and is instrumental in the development and implementation of several award-winning innovative injury control programs. Dr. David Brooks, from the Performance Athletics Sports Medicine Clinic in Summerland BC, presentation is on Concussion & Sport. Dr. Brooks is the recent co-author with Dr. Brian Hunt of the paper "Current Concepts in Concussion Diagnosis & Management in Sports: A Clinical Review ".  Dr. Ian Pike and Dr. Shelina Babul from the BC Injury and Research & Prevention Unit will engage us in an interactive game of Jeopardy titled "Protect Your Melon". The BC Injury & Research & Prevention Unit takes the position that injuries are predictable and preventable. "They are not accidents, not the result of chance occurrence, while the risk of injury is constant; tools to manage that risk are available to individuals, communities and societies." Mr. Richard Kinar has lobbied the government for the past 4 years for funding to allow the Canadian Standards Association to underwrite Canadian Standards for helmets of ski/snowboard, in-line skating, skateboarding, push scooters and other small wheeled vehicles.  Mr. Kinar joins our keynote speakers on an injury prevention panel at the end of the day.  Dr. Shelina Babul is the moderator for this panel.  Comments and questions from participants are welcomed.
We hope the day provides a perspective on what we all can do to reduce the burden and cost of acquired brain injury.

The PCBIC Steering Committee would like to extend their thanks and appreciation for Dr. Shelina Babul's assistance in the planning of this Prevention Workshop.

PRE-CONFERENCE WORKSHOP 2 ~ HUMAN RELATIONS - THE KEY TO A MORE ENRICHED LIFE
Thursday, February 15, 2007

Al Condeluci, PhD, opens this human relations workshop. "There is no question that some people seem to be more successful in their work, with their families and in their lives in general. Often we might think these successful people are either smarter, or luckier than we might be. When, in reality, there are key elements that relate closely to effectiveness and success with others. This session will look at the basic elements of human relations and pull out the stages and aspects of what makes for a more effective person. Building from the theories of Stephen Covey and Peter Senge, this interactive session will have something for everyone - participants will take a closer look at their own values and characteristics and explore the personal elements of effectiveness. Communication aspects will be examined and human relations elements will be transposed to family, work or life issues."

Al Condeluci has been an advocate and catalyst for building community capacities and understanding culture since 1970. Born and raised in the steel town of McKees Rocks, Philadelphia still making his home there, he holds a BA in Psychology from Youngstown Sate University, his Masters in Social Work and Ph.D in Education from the University of Pittsburgh. He is the CEO of his organization, UCP/CLASS of Pittsburgh since 1973. Al has emerged as a national leader and consultant on human services and community issues.
